SITE OF SPECIAL SCIENTIFIC INTEREST: CITATION

ANGLESEY LLYN PADRIG

National Grid Reference: SH363727

Site Area: 25.9 ha

Description

Llyn Padrig is selected for its biological interest, primarily as an example of a mesotrophic basin mire.

The site is situated in part of south-west Anglesey where wetland plant communities have developed in a natural, waterlogged hollow in which there is also still an area of open water. Mire development appears to have been relatively undisturbed by artificial drainage at this locality and various swamp and poor-fen vegetation communities are well represented. Among the locally dominant species are bottle sedge Carex rostrata, common cottongrass Eriophorum angustifolium, marsh cinquefoil Potentilla palustris and the moss Calliergon cuspidatum and there is a host of associated species including the uncommon greater spearwort Ranunculus lingua. Patches of woody vegetation, composed largely of alder Alnus glutinosa and grey willow Salix cinerea, occur in places, and there are damp meadow communities on the drier margins of the basin. The lake itself contributes to the diversity of the wetland and several uncommon aquatic species e.g. autumnal water-starwort Callitriche hermaphroditica have been recorded.
